Resource Introduction: Nearpod

What is it?

Nearpod is presentation software that has imbedded interactive components that allow teachers to interact with students in real time. Features of Nearpod include polls, quizzes, drawing tools, videos and so much more.

Teachers build or download an interactive presentation using Nearpod software, launch the presentation in class and interact with students on virtually any device.  As students interact inside the presentation, data is collected and comprehensive reports are generated.  There are many interactive elements offered by Nearpod at no cost. These elements include: polls, quizzes, open ended questions and drawings. All of the free elements are enough to add spice and rigger to any presentation. The best part about all of these features is the information gleaned from them.

How can I use it?

The true power of Nearpod is the ability to collect information about student understanding. The days of reading faces and exit polls are over! Nearpod allows teachers to formatively assess student knowledge in real time, at any point during a lecture.  Teachers can place a poll at the beginning of a lecture to gauge students prior knowledge.  Ask an open ended question after new information is presented.  And finally, teachers can assess how well students have connected their prior knowledge with new information by having students use the drawing features available through the Nearpod. All of the data collected during the lesson is available to the teacher in REAL TIME. This is a powerful tool to help teachers address any misconceptions or questions students might have during a lesson.

Virtually any discipline can use Nearpod to add an interactive element to a lecture. 

For example:

Math teachers can present a new concept with Nearpod. The teacher could begin by assessing prior knowledge with a multiple choice question, then present the new concept within the presentation and finally summatively assess student understanding by using the drawing feature to ¨show work¨ and solve a problem.  

Art teachers can use Nearpod to interact with students during a presentation. Works from various artists could be presented while students are asked a variety of questions about the artist’s style or inspiration behind the works.
